Colaiste Ide agus Iosef opened its ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) unit in 2015.  Initially one ASD class was opened with 6 pupils with a disgnosis of Autism.  Due to demand it was decided that a second ASD class would open in 2016. 

Currently both ASD classes are at their maximum capacity of 12 pupils.

Some pupils attend the ASD unit for support in subjects, social skills and life skills.  Other students are based in the ASD unit full time.  These students are partaking in the level 2 Junior Cert programme.  This is a very practical programme consisting of 5 PLUs (priority learning units):

  • Communicating and literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Personal care
  • Living in the community
  • Preparing for work

Life skills and social skills are of the  utmost importance.  The ASD unit has its own enclosed sensory garden, a multi-sensory room, two base classrooms and a daily living skills room.
